Discovery Catalog User's Guide

A brief guide to the basic features of the WMS Discovery online catalog.

Basic Searching in Discovery

Searching in the Discovery Catalog is similar to searching in other systems. By using AND to connect your key terms, and by putting key terms with more than one word into quotation marks (e.g.., "key terms"),  you will achieve greater precision in your search results.

On your results page, it is important to understand four different features:

1. Default search: The default search is "Best Match". This default minimizes noise results, such as having reviews of the book you are seeking appear in the search results ahead of the book itself.

2. Library: Results will automatically appear from both the Law Library and Axinn Library. To search only the Law Library's collection, deselect the Axinn Library box.

3. Format: The Discovery Catalog will yield results for resources in many different formats. For instance, you will see results for print books, eBooks, journal articles, videos, and more. To see one format over another (e.g.,. print books only), you must select it.

4. Accessing a Record: To access a record, you will need to select the resource's title. This is how you will see where a book is located on the shelves in the library, or how to access a downloadable article or other electronic materials.
